Real business fabric
Sectors I know well in León.
León combines a deep economic transition (mining basins towards green hydrogen), recognised agri-food and Way of Saint James tourism crossing the entire province. These are the five fronts where I have worked most.
Energy transition: mining basins towards green hydrogen
Babia-Laciana, Sabero, Fabero and Villablino experienced coal closure with severe social consequences. Today there are serious just transition projects: Ciudad de la Energía Foundation (CIUDEN) in Ponferrada, the ELHYRO green hydrogen cluster in Cubillos del Sil, large wind and solar projects. It's one of the regions where the term 'just transition' has real content, not just framework.
My work with developers and regional projects is very delicate local communication: these are communities with historical memory of mining, where 'renewable' is associated with 'they change my village'. I work on municipal communication plans, tables with neighbourhood associations and narrative acknowledging the cost of the past rather than ignoring it.
Agri-food with origin labels: León Cured Meat IGP, León Beef IGP
León concentrates two recognised meat IGPs (León Cured Meat and León Beef) supporting a family fabric of producers in La Bañeza, Astorga and Maragatería regions. Plus Astorga sponge cake, Vegacervera goat cured meat, Órbigo trout. Premium products with strong narrative but weak channel beyond the regional market.
I work with family cured meat and beef producers on HORECA positioning outside Castile and León (Madrid, Barcelona, international markets), building direct online channels, and combining with other territorial products (Bierzo wine + cured meat + sheep cheese) as cross-sell product of the León brand.
DOP Bierzo: emerging premium mencía
DOP Bierzo has spent 15 years gaining international recognition thanks to the mencía variety and a handful of flagship wineries (Descendientes de J. Palacios, Raúl Pérez, Dominio de Tares). It's a DOP where small and mid-sized producers can access international wine press if they build the right narrative: old vineyards, slate soils, recovery of autochthonous varieties.
My work with mid-sized Bierzo wineries (2-8 M€) is very concrete: Bierzo terroir narrative holding premium price, packaging and digital communication suited to international wine clubs, and HORECA channel opening in the UK, Netherlands and US without exhausting the sales team.
Way of Saint James tourism and heritage
The French Way crosses the entire province of León (Sahagún, Mansilla, León city, Astorga, Ponferrada, Villafranca) and is probably the richest stretch in heritage: León cathedral, San Marcos, Gaudí palace in Astorga, Templar castle of Ponferrada. At the same time, it's a crowded Camino in high season where the neighbourhood hostel competes against large hotel chains.
I work with family hostels, rural houses and Camino catering on positioning that filters the pilgrim who does spend (not the extreme low-cost), digital pre-arrival communication to capture direct booking, and product leveraging León beyond the strict Camino (Las Médulas, Silencio valley, mining basins as new industrial tourism).
