What Kit Digital is and who can apply in Castilla y León

Kit Digital is the grant programme of the Government of Spain, managed by Red.es within the España Digital agenda and funded by European Next Generation funds, that subsidizes the adoption of digital solutions in SMEs, micro-enterprises and the self-employed. Instead of handing cash to the company, the programme awards a digital voucher that can only be spent on solutions from a closed catalogue and through accredited providers, the so-called digitalization agents.

To apply for it in Castilla y León the requirements are the same as in the rest of the country: have your tax residence in Spain, be registered for the minimum length of time required by each call, not exceed the size limits of your segment, be up to date with your tax and Social Security obligations, and not fall under any of the prohibitions to be a grant beneficiary. The programme was organized into three large segments by headcount: 10 to fewer than 50 (Segment I), 3 to fewer than 10 (Segment II) and 0 to fewer than 3 employees, which is where most self-employed professionals and micro-enterprises fall (Segment III).

That third segment is key in a community like ours. The productive fabric of Castilla y León is dominated by the self-employed and micro-enterprises, and the distribution of the grants reflects it: 64.79% of Kit Digital beneficiaries in the region were self-employed and the remaining 35.21% were SMEs. If you want to understand the programme in depth and by segment, I recommend reading my complete guide to Kit Digital for SMEs and the self-employed, which acts as the pillar for this article.

Real Kit Digital figures in Castilla y León and Valladolid

The official figures place Castilla y León among the communities with the highest adoption of the programme. In total, 49,051 grants have been awarded for an amount exceeding €192.9 million, a volume that has benefited more than 157,000 employed people in the community.

Valladolid leads the provincial distribution with more than 4,700 vouchers awarded and over €20 million in aid, in line with its weight as the economic engine of the region. Valladolid is followed by provinces such as Burgos, León and Salamanca, then Palencia, Zamora, Segovia, Ávila and Soria, which complete the distribution. The concentration of economic activity in the larger urban centres explains why the most populated provinces absorb most of the aid.

By call, the bulk of the activity was concentrated in the third one (77.53% of the grants, aimed at Segment III of the self-employed and micro-enterprises), followed by the second (13.47%) and the first (6.47%). By sector, the ones that demanded the voucher the most were Commerce and Hospitality (31.49%), financial and insurance activities (18.22%), construction (11.79%) and transport and communications (6.18%). These numbers confirm something I see every day working in the area: local commerce and services are the great protagonists of regional digitalization.

Categories of solutions financed by Kit Digital

The digital voucher cannot be spent on just anything: it finances a closed catalogue of solution categories, each with a different maximum amount depending on the company segment. The main ones are:

Voucher amounts range from €2,000 for Segment III self-employed up to several tens of thousands of euros in the larger segments and in categories such as the secure workstation. The practical recommendation is to prioritize the solutions that genuinely move the needle for your business, rather than piling up categories just to use up the voucher.

How to apply for Kit Digital step by step

The application process is relatively simple if you tackle it in order. These are the steps:

1. Register on Acelera pyme

Go to the acelerapyme.gob.es portal and create your account as a company or self-employed professional. It is the official entry point to the whole digitalization ecosystem. In Castilla y León you also have in-person Acelera Pyme Offices at the chambers of commerce and provincial councils, offering free support.

2. Complete the digital diagnostic test

Before requesting the voucher you must take the digital-maturity self-assessment test. It is a questionnaire that evaluates your company’s starting point and is mandatory in order to process the grant. Take it seriously: it guides which solutions make the most sense for you.

3. Apply for the voucher on the Red.es e-office

With a digital certificate, submit the application on the Red.es electronic office within the deadline of the call corresponding to your segment. Grants are usually awarded on a first-come, first-served basis until funds run out, so it is best not to delay.

4. Choose a digitalization agent and sign the agreement

Once the voucher is granted, select the digitalization agent who will provide the service from the Acelera pyme catalogue and formalize the solution-provision agreement with them. As a general rule you have a deadline (around six months depending on the call) to formalize that agreement.

5. Deploy the solution and justify it

The agent deploys the solution and then comes the most delicate phase: justification. There is a deadline (usually twelve months) to finish the engagement, and the documentation must be impeccable, because mistakes at this stage are the main cause of repayment. I develop this in detail in my guide on how to justify Kit Digital and avoid repayment.

Digitalization agents in Castilla y León: why choose a local one

The digitalization agent is the accredited company or professional that deploys the solution and collects the voucher. The national catalogue has thousands of them, many of nationwide scope with no real presence in the community. Choosing a digitalization agent based in Castilla y León brings tangible advantages.

A local agent knows the particularities of the regional business fabric, with its predominance of the self-employed, micro-enterprises and sectors such as agri-food, commerce and services. They can offer on-site support when needed, which is much appreciated during the justification phase. They know the complementary grants from the Junta, the provincial councils and the chambers, and how to combine them. And they understand the reality of the less populated provinces, where digitalization needs differ from those of a large city.

The chambers of commerce of the community operate as Acelera Pyme Offices with free advice. The Valladolid Chamber stands out for its Cámara BOOST programme, the first digital-skills accelerator in Castilla y León, with practical training for entrepreneurs and employees. The chambers of León, Burgos, Salamanca, Palencia, Segovia, Soria, Ávila and Zamora also offer digital advice and referral to local agents, coordinated by the Regional Council of Chambers. As a marketing consultant in Valladolid I often refer clients to these resources when they complement a digitalization project.

Complementary regional grants: DigitalICE and the Junta de Castilla y León

Beyond the national Kit Digital, the Junta de Castilla y León has its own ecosystem of digitalization grants, managed through the Institute for Business Competitiveness (ICE). Many SMEs are unaware of it and let money they are entitled to slip away.

The DigitalICE programme

DigitalICE is the main regional line for business digitalization, with a budget of €11 million for the year. It includes several lines: the Basic Digitalization line, which awards a grant of €1,200 per application with the obligation to justify the corresponding spend on digitalization solutions; and the Advanced Digitalization line, with €1.85 million, which funds a significant percentage of the cost (generally between 55% and 75%) of advanced digital-transformation projects (ERP, CRM, business intelligence, automation). SMEs and the self-employed with a registered office or workplace in Castilla y León can benefit.

Local-commerce modernization (2026)

In March 2026 the Department of Industry, Commerce and Employment opened a specific call for the modernization, digitalization and improved management of local commerce, with grants of up to €30,000 per establishment at a 75% aid intensity. The eligible budget ranges from €2,000 to €40,000 and covers digitalization of management (e-invoicing, POS, inventory), e-commerce, digital marketing and modernization of the physical point of sale. The application window opened on 25 March and closed on 9 April 2026, with an initial budget of €1 million, extendable by a further million. If your business is retail, it is worth keeping an eye on the next editions of this line. Current status of Kit Digital and new opportunities

Let’s be clear: all the original Kit Digital calls are closed. The last ones, aimed at Segment III and at community-of-property entities, civil societies and agricultural holdings, ended their application period on 31 October 2025, when the programme surpassed 860,000 grants awarded nationally.

However, the legal framework is still alive. Order TDF/39/2026, of 26 January, published in the BOE of 28 January 2026, amends the programme’s regulatory bases: it removes the rigid time limit that marked its end, establishes that it will apply «until the total exhaustion of the funds» and allows the distribution of leftover funds not used in previous calls. It also relaxes some seniority requirements for the self-employed. In practice, this leaves the door open to new calls funded by remaining budget, although each one will set its own deadlines.

My recommendation if you are in Castilla y León: don’t sit and wait. While a possible reopening of Kit Digital arrives, the DigitalICE lines and the local-commerce call are still active and, in some cases, more generous than the national voucher itself. The smart strategy is to plan your digitalization now and fit each investment into the grant that best covers it.

Mistakes that trigger repayment of the grant

Receiving the voucher is only half the journey. The other half is justifying it correctly, and this is where most companies stumble. These are the mistakes that most often lead to a repayment (returning the aid with interest):

The way to avoid them is to work with a serious digitalization agent and document every step from the start. I have gathered all the casuistry in my guide on how to justify Kit Digital and avoid repayment, highly recommended reading before signing anything.

Frequently asked questions

Who can apply for Kit Digital in Castilla y León?

SMEs, micro-enterprises and self-employed professionals with a tax residence in Spain that meet the size and seniority requirements of their segment, are up to date with the Tax Agency and Social Security, and do not fall under any prohibitions. In Castilla y León, 64.79% of the beneficiaries were self-employed, reflecting the weight of this group in the community’s productive fabric.

How many Kit Digital grants have been awarded in Castilla y León?

In the community, 49,051 grants have been awarded for an amount exceeding €192.9 million, benefiting more than 157,000 employed people. Valladolid leads the distribution with more than 4,700 vouchers and over €20 million.

What is the amount of the Kit Digital voucher?

It depends on the company segment and the solution category. For Segment III self-employed and micro-enterprises the voucher starts at €2,000, and in the larger segments and categories such as the secure workstation it reaches several tens of thousands of euros. The voucher can only be spent on catalogue solutions through accredited digitalization agents.

Can Kit Digital be requested in 2026?

All the original calls closed on 31 October 2025. However, Order TDF/39/2026 amended the bases to allow leftover funds to be distributed until exhausted, with no fixed deadline, which leaves the door open to new calls. It is worth monitoring the official publications on acelerapyme.gob.es.

Which Junta de Castilla y León grants complement Kit Digital?

The ICE’s DigitalICE programme, with €11 million, offers a Basic Digitalization line (€1,200 per application) and an Advanced Digitalization line (which funds generally between 55% and 75% of the cost). In addition, the local-commerce modernization call grants up to €30,000 per establishment at a 75% aid intensity.

Is it better to choose a local digitalization agent in Castilla y León?

For many businesses, yes. An agent based in the community offers in-person support, knows the regional business fabric, masters the complementary regional grants and can advise on how to combine them, something especially useful during the justification phase and in the less populated provinces.

What mistakes lead to having to repay Kit Digital?

The most common are not keeping the solution active for the required time, poorly documenting invoices and payments, missing deadlines and milestones, forgetting the European-funding publicity obligations, or delivering solutions that do not meet the catalogue’s minimum requirements. Documenting every step from the start is the best prevention.
